Georgetown University, a major international research university with nine schools, an affiliated hospital, and many highly-ranked academic programs, has a mature, layered security program. The university has more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students taking classes at five locations, including Washington, D.C., and Georgetown’s campuses in Qatar, Italy and Dubai. The university’s Capitol Campus has expanded significantly in recent years through acquisition and new construction, which has brought new security challenges.

Jay Gruber, Associate Vice-President for Public Safety and Chief Public Safety Officer at Georgetown University will discuss the unique challenges his team has faced, and continues to face, when designing and implementing a security strategy for a historic campus environment and urban campus such as Georgetown University. During this webinar, Gruber will also discuss taking a holistic approach to building a security strategy, leveraging economy of scale, ways security leaders can integrate themselves in the building and capital planning process, and more.

Jay Gruber is Associate Vice-President for Public Safety and Chief Public Safety Officer at Georgetown University. He oversees the Police Department, Emergency Management, and International Safety and Security as well as Clery Act compliance. During his tenure at Georgetown, he has developed innovative community support programs, including a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), Crisis Intervention Trained (CIT) Officers, and a campus-wide Active Shooter Response training program. In the first half of 2012, Gruber served as an FBI Police Executive Fellow assigned to the National Joint Terrorism Task Force supporting the Campus Liaison Program. Gruber previously spent 26 years with the University of Maryland, College Park Police Department where he served as an Assistant Chief of Police before retiring in 2012. He is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) accredited through ASIS International.
