Architectural Record Academies of Digital Learning

The Custom Home Academy focuses on unique, contemporary design strategies utilized in largely single-family residential building and explores the home as it relates to modern design and lifestyle concepts. The courses feature such ideals as embracing comfort, nature, practicality, and sustainability and identifies ways in which designs are incorporating these trends. The courses here can be viewed specifically within the overall lens of the cost, regulatory, environmental, and aesthetic constraints of a modern world, where occupant satisfaction and aging in place are increasingly on the minds of architects and owners. Creative strategies are increasingly needed to address the myriad of aesthetic and performance requirements of home design across the United States and throughout the world.

Earn 8 AIA LU (1 AIA LU/HSW + 7 AIA LU).

The Multifamily Housing Academy focuses on multiunit housing and explores the concept of “home” as it relates not only to individual buildings but also with a view toward community connection. The courses here can be viewed specifically within the overall context of the cost, regulatory, site, and development constraints of a rapidly urbanizing world. As innovative design is tied deeply to affordability and, increasingly, concerns of resiliency, creative strategies are needed to address the multiple problems and obstacles that inhibit delivery of the massive amounts of new housing now needed across the United States and throughout the world.

The Sustainability Academy focuses on the increasing use of safe, eco-friendly materials within the larger tent of sustainable design within the sphere of residential, commercial and industrial applications. It explores environmental and aesthetic benefits, technical advances, code-compliance, as well as the inherent opportunities for using healthy materials and sustainability strategies to enhance not only aesthetics but the overall lifecycle and integrity of a given project. As innovative design solutions become increasingly critical in creating sustainable, cost-effective, modern structures, healthy, natural materials and products are seeing a renaissance for both their beauty and performance qualities.

The Wood Structures Academy delves into the innovative design and structural uses of wood materials in residential and commercial applications. It explores environmental and aesthetic benefits, technical advances, code-compliance, as well as the inherent opportunities for using wood in both conventional and unconventional ways. As innovative design solutions become increasingly critical in creating sustainable, cost-effective, modern structures, wood is seeing a new surge in popularity for both its natural beauty and performance qualities.

The K-12 Schools Learning Academy, as the name implies, focuses on architectural and design innovations for schools and provides a rich mix of learning opportunities, including: two courses featuring nearly two dozen Architectural Record Building Type Study articles addressing the K-12 market; two editorial CEUs from the magazine highlighting innovative school design practices and strategies with specific attention paid to security, safety, and energy savings; one special-focus CEU examining the features and functions of spray-foam insulation in school construction; and one interactive webinar bringing together school design experts from across the country to discuss three recent high-profile, extraordinary school projects. It explores environmental and aesthetic benefits and technological advances, as well as the inherent opportunities—particularly occupant comfort and energy savings—in incorporating daylighting and shading strategies into modern building design. As innovative design solutions become increasingly critical in creating cost-effective, sustainable, modern structures, the use of natural light and automated shading systems are seeing a rise in popularity in order to meet the visual and performance goals of a wide variety of projects.

The Stadiums Learning Academy focuses on architectural and design innovations for stadiums as well as other sports facilities in the United States and abroad—everything from indoor pools and baseball fields to football, soccer, and Olympic arenas. It explores the use of a variety of materials and strategies to meet the challenges inherent to creating large, fan-friendly venues while still meeting cost, time, and regulatory constraints. The Acoustics Academy focuses on the basics of acoustics, acoustic design, and noise control in a variety of applications, such as performance spaces, open offices, and learning facilities, in the United States and abroad. The courses will further explore the challenges, benefits, and innovative solutions being incorporated in modern building design in order to fully optimize acoustical quality in commercial applications. Numerous projects will be highlighted, particularly where sound is critical to occupants, performers, teachers, students, and audience members. It will explore a variety of technological advances, strategies, new products, and material selections that can influence the acoustic environment, as well as acknowledge the growing role of acousticians in responsible project design.

    An academy is a collection of editorial-rich courses around a specific area of interest such as: education, multifamily housing, sustainability, acoustics, etc. Academy courses include a variety of course formats including, articles, webinars, multimedia and research reports.

  • What is a digital badge?

    A digital badge is a graphical representation of an accomplishment, skill or interest that can be earned and shared online. Each digital badge contains verified metadata that outlines your achievement and the criteria required to earn the digital badge. This allows colleagues, peers and employers to view and verify accomplishment and skills.

  • How do I earn a digital badge?

    Digital badges are earned by successfully completing all the courses within a specific academy. Once you have successfully completed and passed all the quizzes within an academy, you will then be able to view and download your digital badge from within the “My Academy Progress” page.

  • What are the benefits of a digital badge?

    Digital badges are a great way to showcase your achievement or mastery within a particular field or interest. They can be shared on various social media platforms, email signatures, websites and resumes.

  • How do I share my digital badge?

    You can share your digital badge on social media platforms or embed your badge in a website or resume through the “My Academy Progress” page on the CE Center. Additionally, you can export your badge to other badge-storing platforms, such as Mozilla backpack.
