Webinar On-Demand
Sponsored by Ornamental Metal Institute of New York
Presented by Berardo Matalucci, Mic Patterson, PhD, LEED AP+, Holger Schulze-Ehring and Jessica Young, RA

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate the role of the pandemic in highlighting the importance of IEQ.
  2. Learn why IEQ is heavily influenced by a building’s façade system.
  3. Explain what features of the system are necessary to respond to a range of environmental conditions.
  4. Apply the information gained from the competition’s solutions for dynamically adapting building enclosures.

With people spending about 90% of their time indoors during the past year and a half of the global pandemic, indoor environmental quality (IEQ) becomes of paramount importance. Indoor air quality is also fundamental to IEQ, and the facade system holds the potential to provide crucial natural ventilation while enhancing the thermal resilience for building occupants.

Balancing occupant comfort with lifecycle carbon performance was the goal of the 2022 Metals in Construction magazine Design Challenge, a competition to generate ideas for an innovative curtain wall system to enclose a new, site-specific office building. During this webinar, competition jurors will discuss the context of the Challenge and entries selected as winning examples of facades that can respond dynamically to a range of environmental conditions.

Berardo is a recipient of the Europe 40 Under 40 2012 Design Award and a finalist for the Fast Company 2017 World Changing Ideas Award for his doctoral investigation on microclimatic diversity in buildings.

MicP

Mic Patterson, PhD, LEED AP+, is a designer, researcher, educator, futurist, author, photographer, and entrepreneur. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology and sustainable building practices. He pioneered the introduction of structural glass facade technology in the US in the 1990s, implementing diverse and novel applications including cable trusses, cable nets and grid shells. Mic is currently the Ambassador of Innovation & Collaboration, an officer and board member of the Facade Tectonics Institute, an organization which he founded and acted as inaugural president. He is also a lecturer at the University of Southern California School of Architecture. He was formerly the Director of Strategic Development for Schüco USA, playing a founding role in the launch of the Virtual Construction Lab of Schüco. He was among the founding group of the Advanced Technology Studio of Enclos where he worked as the Vice President of Strategic Development. Mic has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced facade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures (Wiley).

HolgerE

Holger Schulze-Ehring, has over twenty years of structural and architectural design experience, with a focus on long-span, lightweight and specialty structures. He founded Büro Ehring in 2016, after a long tenure at architecture and engineering firm Santiago Calatrava, and has continuously worked on landmark projects world-wide, including in the United States and Europe. Mr. Schulze-Ehring’s expertise is in advanced engineering with a collaborative approach to design. He leverages his cross-disciplinary capabilities to deliver innovative and specialized solutions to complex architectural challenges for his award-winning projects. A strong technical and creative background forms his considerable proficiency in engineering and designing unique and inventive structures.

JessicaY"

Jessica Young, RA, is a Principal at Heintges Consulting Architects & Engineers. She has extensive experience managing academic and cultural projects, and since joining the firm in 2005, has contributed to the technical design and construction of complex facades across the U.S. In particular, her priority is to marry building envelope performance with the Architect’s aesthetic vision. Ms. Young is excited about the opportunities for integrating opaque materials into façade design to meet the challenges of increasingly stringent energy codes, sustainability initiatives, and occupant comfort. She is a licensed architect in both New York and Massachusetts, and holds a Masters degree in Architecture from Columbia University.
