This course introduces the learner to stunning designs featuring the use of glass and the intersection of architecture, resiliency and the community. Listen as presenters explore the social dimension of resilient design through the lens of these current projects.
Matthew Z. Leach AIA, Associate Principal, Page will discuss, 200 West 6th Street in Austin, Texas, the new headquarters for internet job search company, Indeed. The all-glass tower will become Austin’s largest office building at 709,000 square feet, as well as its tallest at 554 feet.
Dominic Bettison, Director, WilkinsonEyre, will present the CF Eaton Centre Bridge project, which revitalises a connection between two shopping malls in downtown Toronto by providing an attractive, landmark pedestrian crossing above the street. The form of the bridge and choice of materials now create a metaphorical handshake between the two buildings at first floor level. The architectural response is a graded shift, through geometry, from a traditional arch in the façade of the Hudson Bay building to a modern rectangular opening in the Eaton centre; the twisting, warping form accommodating two very different architectures.
Bruce Milley, Architectural Design Manager, Guardian Industries will discuss, 7 St. Thomas Street, Toronto. Urban Toronto selected 7 St. Thomas Street as one of the top 5 Most Influential Buildings in Toronto of the 2010s.

“The contrast between the solidity of the red brick below with the translucent permeability of the glass tower—which steps back from the Victorian frontages—succeeds in highlighting both typologies. The discrete tower's curtain wall is also strongly characterized by its enamel fritting. Wrapping the body of the building, the frit lends the smooth upper levels an eye-catching aesthetic.”

A director at WilkinsonEyre since 2006, Dominic has led many of the practice’s key projects, with an emphasis on tall buildings. These include the 440m high Guangzhou International Finance Center, winner of the RIBA Lubetkin Prize for Best International Building in 2012, and the 330m Wuhan Qiaokou tower. Phase 1 of CIBC Square, two 248m, 54-storey towers in Toronto, will complete in 2021. Dominic is a founding member of the London chapter of the Council for Tall Buildings and the Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Urban Realm Committee. |
