Presented by Valérie Hayez and Markus Plettau

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn why reducing embodied carbon in building materials such as silicones is important for reducing greenhouse gases.
  2. Describe the key elements of the PAS 2060 standard to help ensure verified carbon neutrality.
  3. Recognize the carbon-neutral silicone sealants that are available for three different building façade applications.
  4. Identify the benefits that the project-specific carbon neutrality service can offer architects, design consultants and building owners.

The world's first commercially available carbon neutral silicones for FACADES are being launched by Dow as key part of its carbon neutrality service offer for structural glazing, insulating glass and weathersealing. The project-specific service is aligned with industry efforts to reduce embodied carbon in construction materials and limit greenhouse gases to combat climate change. Audited processes of the widely recognized PAS 2060 standard help ensure verified carbon neutrality. Carbon-neutral silicones are supported with Verified Carbon Neutrality Certificates, external Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and certified Life Cycle Analyses (LCAs). The innovative service allows designing with more freedom by engineering less impact.

Based in Seneffe, Belgium, Valérie provides technical service to the construction design community, including façade system manufacturers, architects and engineers. She has developed a broad expertise in façade engineering, including structural performance, fire safety, and thermal or acoustic insulation. Valérie is responsible for identifying and communicating industry needs to Dow‘s Research and Development community and supporting the development and commercialization of new products. She also is active in several standardization associations. She holds a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in applied sciences (electronics and optics) from the University of Brussels in Belgium.

MarkusP

Markus Plettau, Global Marketing Manager FAÇADE, DOW Building Science is based in Wiesbaden, Germany, Markus leads the marketing activities for Dow Building Science in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He also has taken on responsibility for boosting the global growth and profile of the façade segment. His main objectives are to provide product and system solutions for building envelopes, enabling energy-efficient, sustainable, safe and durable façade designs. Markus joined the former Dow Corning Corporation (now Dow) in 1999 as Application Engineer for windows and doors and took on various technical assignments, including structural glazing and window bonding. He then moved to the commercial function to develop the window bonding business – and later the façade business – in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With this experience and market knowledge, Markus moved into marketing, leading various segments before assuming his current role. He holds a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Dortmund in Germany.
