On June 23, 2016, OSHA issued a final rule to curb lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease in America's workers by limiting their exposure to respirable crystalline silica. As of September 23, 2017, OSHA will begin to enforce the new ruling with employers to limit employee exposure to crystalline silica dust to 50 μg/m3 or lower, averaged over an 8-hour day.
